  • Identify words used in United States English that have their origins in Hawaiian language and culture
  • Explore the use of pidgin in cultures where several languages come together.
  • Read Hawaii’s myths and legends
  • Traditionally Hawaii’s history and legends were passed down orally.  Talk to parents or other older relatives to learn some aspect of your family history.
  • Several well known authors visited Hawaii and in some cases, Molokai.  Read what Mark Twain, Robert Louis Stevenson and Jack London had to say about the islands.
  • Read one or more of Graham Salisbury’s books which take place in Hawaii.

 2.      Health & Science

  • Explore the history of leprosy and the various ways that communities have responded to it.
  • Identify the scientists who studied leprosy and those who developed drugs to treat it
  • Create a leprosy timeline.
  • Explore the effects of leprosy on the body,
  • Research leprosy in the Bible.  Compare the symptoms of Biblical leprosy and those described in leprosy as we know it.
  • Do online research to discover some places in the world where leprosy still exists

  • Discover ancient Hawaiian games and entertainment

4.      Father Damien & Others Who Worked on Molokai

  • Learn what you can about Father Damien’s early life and how it may have influenced his decision to live among leprosy patients
  • Explore Father Damien’s life and work on The Big Island as well as on Molokai
  • Research Mother Marianne and the contribution she and other nuns made to life in the leprosy settlement.
  • Research information about Joseph Dutton, his motivation for moving to Molokai and his contribution to the community of Kalawao.
  • Learn what you can about Ambrose Hutchinson.
